Brush Recommendation!

As usual, I like to test drive new tools...here, my new set of Utrecht Deluxe Watercolor Brushes...

It was an incredible buy, a set of four brushes on sale for $14.99 at our local Utrecht store...

I had never even OWNED a #14 brush before...wow...this one carries a ton of water, goes forever, holds a lovely point...what a deal!  I just ran out of room on the page or I could have done much more with these...obviously, they're very versatile.
Had to see how far it would go on a single loading...this is a 9 x 12" Strathmore Visual Journal.  Wow...

I liked the brushes so much that I went back and got my brother-in-law a set!

  1. Just coincidentally I bought this set, too, a few weeks ago. But I hadn't gotten to test drive them. Thanks for your review.

  2. Let me know what you think, Zoe! As I said, I'd never even owned a #14, and I'm in love!

    1. I had a chance to use the brushes, especially the 14 this week and it is really a rather good one for my purposes. In fact I think I prefer it to the Loew Cornell 7020. I was using them alternately, and the Utrecht seems to outperform.

Have you been using it regularly? Any change in opinion?

    2. I haven't had much chance to paint, but hoping to go out this afternoon, Zoe! I love Loew-Cornell brushes, but wow, this one's amazing for the price.

    1. Wendi, the largest Blue Heron piston waterbrush is pretty big, at least a 10, perhaps a 12--I just find them awkward since I have to reach over with the other hand to twist the piston and release more water!

  4. Thanks so much for the review. I just ordered a set and took advantage of a 25% off deal on non-sale items to order a much needed palette.

  5. What? You mean I owned a #14 before you did?!! (Mine was one of 3 free brushes when I bought my large Schmincke tin)

And what do you mean, "local Utrecht"? Is there a store in Kansas City? I'd like to try their brand of burnt sienna.

  6. You got free brushes with your Schmincke tin?!?! You find the BEST deals, girl!

Yes, there's a store on Main Street, in the Westport area, roughly. They used to be off Westport Road, but moved a few years ago--nice store!

  7. Italian Art Store always offers some kind of brush deal with their watercolor palettes.

  8. Thanks for this 'heads up' Cathy. I looked Utrecht up online and they had the same deal, then I saw that I have a store nearby!!! I never knew we had a Utrecht. I went this morning and they still had plenty of these sets. I found several other goodies as well, and decided I much prefer Utrecht to the other large art store in the area, brighter and easier to navigate, and some great deals. :)

    1. Ours is nice, too, and well equipped with a range of kids to student to pro. My cousin used to use their paints and canvases all the time, and it's taken me all these years to find them!

    2. I shop at stores that are female-friendly. So, I shop at Dick Blick online and my local store, Prizm.

    3. I have no idea what that means, Maureen. I shop at Blick and at our local art supply store too, but Utrecht seems perfectly supportive of women.

    4. Is there something that leads you to believe that Utrecht is not women-friendly, Maureen?

    5. I've shopped in various Utrecht stores for more than 25 years, most recently in Pittsburgh. Not only were they friendly they gifted me with a t-shirt, and helped me pack up my goodies.

  9. Here too, Zoe...very helpful people, and gave us reusable bags to carry our stuff in...
