First Entry On My iPad Sketch Journal

Found a neat app - Paper 53 - that lets me make journals and offers sketching tools that include a pencil, fountain pen, broad and thin markers, brush and eraser. Colors are limited but it's fun to figure out how to best use what's offered.

First I tried a stylus that has a rubber tip. No luck at all as response time was way off. My finger worked okay, but I couldn't see where my lines were going. My new stylus that has a felt-like tip, by Stylus-R-Us, was amazing.

Sure am enjoying the iPad :)

  1. I am brand new to sketching and watercolor, etc. I just took my first on-line class and loved it, but I have soooo much to learn! I have an iPad but had no idea there were so many apps that dealt with drawing. Would you say this is a good way to practice and more forgiving and easier to correct than commiting to paper? Are there other apps that people are using that would be good for beginners?

    1. Lakelly, I'm very new to sketching on an iPad and there are tons of sketching apps. I can't say that it's easier than traditional tools. There's a learning curve to understand how each app works and every stylus is not created equal. If you want to practice eye/hand coordination and learn how to focus on really looking at your subject and sketching what you truly see, then yes, I'd say using an iPad as a sketching tool is good as there is no paper waste.

But over all..... one must learn how to walk first. Just like in calligraphy.... you've got to put your time in with practicing alphabets, understanding strokes, pen pressures and letter shapes before the confidence builds up enough that you can break the rules and fly.

There is nothing like a pen or pencil on paper. It's organic and still my favorite. Little steps lead to great things, Lakelly.... keep sketching :)

  2. They must be interesting sketching tools! I miss your wonderful personal style with watercolor and text, though...

    1. Kate, Interesting but, I'm with you, nothing like the traditional tools. iPad sketching is so new to me. I may figure out how to get a little closer to my 'look'- by the time I'm ninety! Ha ha :)

    2. I tried a tablet for a while, but I'm so spoiled by the immediacy and personality of more traditional tools--I gave it up! And of course being in love with watercolor for 35 years or so, nothing quite beats it for me...I'm STILL trying to "master" it.

    3. Yes, you've summed it up perfectly, Kate!! :) New gadgets are fun but the push to make them take over traditional tools doesn't set well. So many art forms are on the outs due to technology. We must carry on and preserve paper, brushes, paints, graphite..... and let's not forget books!

  3. So cool. Is the app named paper 54? I could not find it in my app store search?
