Painting on the spot

I did this video last summer, and never got it up!

  1. I like the extra splashes, color and detail you have put in the finished painting shown at the very end of the video, obviously after the demo itself ended! Really helps bring it out of the ordinary. Thanks for sharing such a lengthy and helpful demo, Cathy!

  3. Thank you, Cathy. I learned a lot watching this video. I love old neighborhoods and old houses; it takes an artist like you to see its soul and make it visible for everyone.

  5. Kate, it's great fun to see you painting. I love the background summer noises as you paint. The shadows on the roof and side of the shed and the little fence you added at the very end are also marvelous. I hope you make many more of these. Roz

  7. Such fun to watch you paint. I really picked up so many pointers from this video. I tend to shy away from the big flat brushes. But I think you have changed that. I am off to give it another try. Thanks Kate!

  9. Thanks so much, all, I'm glad you like it. I've always been fascinated by alleys and garages and sheds...suburbs don't seem to have alleys any more!

  15. Kate, great video! I'm going to give a large-ish flat brush a try. You are able to get so much variety in your strokes using it here, you've inspired me. I also love how you use the sharp end of the handle for drawing with the paint. More inspiration! Seeing you work is always a pleasure. Thanks so much for all your generosity.
    Tchau-wow!

  16. So glad you all enjoyed it! I use flat brushes a lot, even Niji's flat waterbrush...I just really like how versatile they are, and how much ground they can cover.

  17. What a perfect water container. What was it before it became your water container? And thank you so much for sharing your videos. They are wonderful and inspiring.

  19. I really, really enjoyed watching this, Miss Kate. I will echo Ruca's comments and am reminded to wield a flat brush more often!

  20. Thank you, sweet! I REALLY like those flat brushes...I think I could get by with one big round with a good point, and a 3/4" flat, if I had to!

  24. Hi Ms. Cathy, I'm looking forward to your online workshop at Strathmore. Btw, what is the brand of the brush that you're using in the video?

  25. I believe it's one of Princeton's new ones. I like them!

  26. aww thanks for the reply Ms. Cathy. your brushes look great. Are they synthetic, sable or mixed? I already have a size 2 and 4 sable brushes and planning to buy a larger one. Series 7 are too costly for bigger brushes. lol. So I'm trying to find one that would cost me less. :)

  27. They're mostly synthetic, with a few mixed--I paint on the spot a lot, and there's no way I'd chance a brush that cost that much! I love the newer synthetics--good point, hold a lot of water. Check Loew-Cornell brushes, especially--they have several lines that are hard to beat!

  28. Thanks! I'm going to blickart later to check out those brushes.. :)
