John Muir Laws' Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling

The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling by John Muir Laws is a don't-miss-it book for your studio

I am so delighted to have had the chance to preview this book--thick as a city phone book (312 pages!), covering every nature-drawing subject you can imagine in John Muir Laws' inimitable clear, encouraging, and inspiring fashion, this one will stay in my collection of essential art books forever.

John covers using pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, gouache and more, and the variety of subject matter is a nature-artist's delight.

But it's not simply a book on technique.  It includes chapters on Observation and Intentional Curiosity, Projects that Focus Awareness, Methods of Deepening Inquiry, Visual Thinking and Displaying Information, as well as materials and supplies, notes, and exhaustive references.

Take a peek at these pages:

If you've been fortunate enough to have seen John's previous book, The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds, you KNOW how good this one is.  It covers birds and much, much more.

  6. Oh my goodness, I have yet another reason to be grateful to you! I'd sort of heard of John Muir Laws, but hadn't realised that his teaching would still be applicable to me, as I'm in the UK. I'm ordering the book and running through everything on his blog and website! Thank you so much for posting this review!x

  8. This is a fantastic book! I recently reviewed it on my blog and gave it 5-stars. It is also a HUGE book. It's going to take me a year to read it all the way through. I'm sort of treating it like a textbook and going through it a section at a time. JML has been a great encouragement in his Nature Journaling group on Facebook also. This book, along with his group and website, are a complete resource. Highly recommend!

  9. Dear Cathy-I'm just learning watercolor, so I needed some books to be inspired by. I saw your wonderful book-Artist's Journal Workshop, in Barnes & Noble and I had to rush home with it. I have learned so much and love the creative layout and your art so much! I am coming from years of acrylic and oil painting, and find watercolors to be -well- a bit overwhelming to master. In fact-down right discouraging! But I am so in love with the effects watercolors have on paper! Just can't be done with acrylics. So I wanted to tell you that you have inspired me! Thank you!
